Where do you meet with clients?
Neville Career Consulting is located in downtown Washington, DC at 888 16th Street, NW, Suite 800. Clients outside the Washington area can access services through phone consultations and email as can local clients who prefer to do so.
Do you do placement, i.e. have job listings?
Neville Career Consulting is not a placement firm and does not provide clients with specific job postings except on an ad-hoc basis. In contrast to placement firms, we do not represent current or potential employers and do not benefit from your acceptance of any position. We can provide referrals to reputable placement executives upon request but do not receive any compensation for doing so.
What makes your services different from other career resources?
We bring the experience and perspective of having practiced law in a large firm and in the public sector as well as serving in management and policy positions. Having helped lawyers investigate and pursue their professional options, we understand the steps you need to take to succeed.
How long will this take?
We do not require clients to commit to a specified number of sessions in advance. The range and length of services vary, depending on your stage in the search process and your priorities. For some clients, practicing law remains a good fit and they want to identify options closely related to their current work, a.k.a. the "low-hanging fruit." Others are unsure whether they want to practice law per se and are looking for guidance in assessing their interests and skills. Still others are ready to put their legal careers behind them and are looking for assistance navigating the variety of options available to someone with a law degree.
How do you bill your services?
Following an initial consultation, a package tailored to your needs can be arranged. (See box at right.) Many clients, particularly those who have not looked for a job in several years, are interested in guidance on networking, informational interviews and tailoring their resumes. Any work outside of sessions - such as commenting on and editing documents, drafting text for initial contacts and requests for information, revising resumes and cover letters, providing resources and individual contact information - is billed on a pro-rated hourly basis.
Are your services tax deductible?
Yes. For individuals in transition, money spent on finding a new job, including payment for career consulting, is tax deductible. Of course, each individual needs to contact a tax professional for details.
